U-Lite and old PCs

I have two old destop boxes - Pentium iii, pre-1999. U-Lite as-is installs and runs prefectly. Any distro based on Ubuntu > 8.4 won't run properly.

Ubuntu 9.10 and Lubuntu which is based on the same distro won't load the boot iso. They fail with a kernel panic. U-lite will upgrade online, but anything > 8.4 fails to allow a USB stick to be mounted, even manually.

So, I am back to U-Lite based on 8.4, and really pleased with it.

First, please maintain the 8.4-based version. Second, please keep it going! There is nothing out there as good on ancient boxes!!!! It's actually working those boxes better (and much faster) than when the boxes were running Win 98.

Oh, and please consider removing the negative comment from the site that almost seems to recommend Lubunto - for just the reasons I have given above!

Hi I recycle and fix older pcs from freecycle, I have one of these but the hd is not working could I run linux off a pendrive on one of these and would U lite work on it?

I have a computer with no working hard drive

unfortunately u-lite didn't work on the pendrive. macpup-opera the 4.2 version did, but the 4.3 version didn't.

This release is usable as long as

ubuntu supports hardy. Hardy is an lts so it should be supported for a couple more years. I am a afraid our next version will be based on lucid lts but you don't have to upgrade your present system if you don't want to.

Better then Dsl

I have just recently installed U-lite on an older ibm laptop with a 266 mhz P2 processor and it flies with it. I'm quite impressed! it's just as fast as DSL was on the p2 laptop, and it looks way better!

I would highly recommend adding GCC to the installed packages on the Iso image.
I have not been able to access the internet with it yet due to the laptops lack of ethernet and compiler to compile the drivers for my wireless card, but i'll find a way around this ;)

Thanks for providing an awesome OS!
