U-lite

Heritage: the original U-lite

U-lite began as Ubuntulite, a lightweight Ubuntu-based distribution meant to make old computers usable again. Its goal, in the community’s own words, was to be easy for people with minimal computer skills while running on old or resurrected hardware.

This site keeps the name and the idea — small, efficient Linux — and applies it to today’s constrained hardware: IoT devices, routers, single-board computers, edge nodes and mining rigs.

Timeline

  1. Apr 2007 — The project is registered on Launchpad as Ubuntulite (GPL). source
  2. Aug 2008 — Version 0.8-rc2 is listed on DistroWatch: a light-weight distribution based on Ubuntu for old, low-resource computers (Openbox, LXDE components). source
  3. Oct–Nov 2008 — The community votes on a new name; the project becomes U-lite and moves to u-lite.org. source
  4. 2009–2010 — Active forum, sponsors and artwork; discussion of a slimmer install to differ from Lubuntu. source
  5. Oct 2010 — Last planning post: a new release based on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. The project goes quiet. source

This is a fresh start. The u-lite.org domain later changed hands and hosted unrelated content between 2012 and 2024; none of it is connected to this site or to the original project. Snapshots come from the Internet Archive.
