- Full Debian/Ubuntu userland — not a minimal system. No minimum requirements are stated on the project site.
Armbian describes itself as “production-ready Debian and Ubuntu for ARM hardware,” with patched kernels, tested drivers and automated builds meant to work out of the box. The site states support for more than 300 ARM boards from over 60 manufacturers.
It is built on clean upstream Debian and Ubuntu repositories, so the full APT ecosystem is available. Its value is the board work: kernel engineering with device-tree fixes and driver backports for boards that mainstream images ignore.
It is a good choice when your board is not covered by Raspberry Pi OS and you want a familiar Debian environment; it is heavier than Alpine or a Buildroot image.
